Region Yunnan, in Shiping, Jianshui, Tonghai, Gejiu, Kaiyuan, Mengzi, Pingbian, and Hekou counties.
Alternate names   Nisu, Shiping-Jianshui Nisu, Shiping-Jianshui Yi
Dialects Degree of similarity with Eshan-Xinping Yi and Yuanjiang-Mojiang Yi may warrant investigation.

Language development There is a traditional orthography for Southern Yi, related to but distinct from the traditional orthographies used by some other Yi languages. Few people nowadays can read this orthography.
